During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. The trip began innocently enough: admiration of the stunning, if foreboding, scenery; champagne in front of a crackling fire; and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps.

Now one of them is dead . . . and another one of them did it.

Keep your friends close, the old adage goes. But just how close is too close?

● TON AVIS : J'attendais beaucoup de ce livre, car j'ai entendu beaucoup de bien à propos de cette autrice. Je suis assez déçue au final. Il s'agit d'un livre qui alterne les points de vue de chapitre en chapitre et ce n'était malheureusement pas réussi. Ça restait beaucoup en surface et il y avait énormément de passages inutiles. On a besoin de détails pour bien comprendre les liens entre les personnages et tenter de percer le mystère, mais ce n'était pas amené de manière organique. Ça ressemblait plutôt à du collage de faits mais qui n'ont aucune véritable substance. À mon avis, pour qu'un livre soit réussi, il faut nous offrir des personnages auxquels on peut s'identifier ou qu'on puisse au minimum comprendre leurs motivations. Ce n'était pas le cas avec ce livre. L'histoire en elle-même est peu intrigante et les twists sont faciles à prévoir. Je ne recommanderais pas pour toutes ces raisons.
